ABOUT THE OWNERS
MIKE is the muscle of Long Trails Farm and in charge of anything mechanical. He has an uncanny way of figuring things out and solving problems. He has been working on cars and trucks for over forty years and specializes in engine rebuilds and custom suspensions. He is a former United States Marine who served two tours in Iraq and has over a dozen commendations. When he is not at work turning wrenches he works on the farm, plays with the dogs and enjoys movies.
LEAH has degrees in Environmental Science and Biology with a minor in Chemistry and extensive experience in genetics. She studied avian genetics through cockatiels for ten years applying what she learned through selective breeding over a lifetime on the farm and college. She had the only documented line of male and female cinnamon marble mutation. She taught high school for over twenty years in many subjects, but mostly science and agriculture. Her love of German Shepherds is inherited from her great-grandfather who raised and trained them for the military. She has trained dogs since childhood and showed Belgian Sheepdogs in conformation, tracking, and obedience. When she is not at work she is training the dogs, tending the animals and plants and trying to figure out how to make a 36-hour day.
Both Mike and Leah ran Long Trails Learning Farm in Arizona where they provided SAE’s for the local FFA Chapter. They also rescued, retrained, and rehomed horses; raised pigs, goats and chickens; and grew alfalfa for hay. It is their goal to raise animals as true to the heritage type as possible focusing on the breeds they are passionate about as well as to produce wholesome food and help others by sharing their knowledge and experience.
