The how’s and why’s of CHICKEN CHOP.

Chicken chop, feeding chickens kitchen scraps, what to do with food waste

We hate waste, it’s just money and hard work down the drain, so one of the many things we try to keep out of the land fill is our kitchen waste. When we had pigs it wasn’t a problem. Without pigs I would bury it in prep for a new garden bed and let it decompose that way, but our soil is hard to dig and it’s time consuming. Throwing it into the compost just brought the vermin in for late night snacks. So what to do? We don’t want to feed vegetables to the chickens that they can recognize. They are supposed to patrol the garden, not eat it! I have a couple blenders and decided to dedicate one for chopping up and mixing all this great scrap for my chickens, but after dirtying every blender realized the food processor is the right tool for the job. I save scraps in the fridge and when the container is full drop it in the FP and hit the button. Put it on a saucer and the chickens go crazy! Here are things Ive put in CHICKEN CHOP: fish, rice, pasta, carrots, onions, celery, potato peels, tomatoes, apple cores, bread, grapes…you get the idea. The chickens turn it into fertilizer for me and it only takes a few minutes a week to do.
